(Bloomberg) — Wall Street expected Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp. earnings to be bad, but not this bad: America’s biggest energy companies delivered their worst set of quarterly results of the modern era, weighed down by the slump in oil prices and the global collapse in demand due to Covid-19.

But even so, the extent of what was disclosed Friday was at certain points almost breathtaking.

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s rand slumped to a new three-week low in an emerging market rout on Friday as investors’ hopes for a global recovery were dented by a sharp contraction in the U.S. economy.

At 1640 GMT, the rand was 1.63% weaker at 17.0250 per dollar, its weakest since July 8, adding to Thursday’s 2% plunge.

(Bloomberg) — Air Canada escalated a fight with the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the country’s stringent travel rules, threatening to suspend more routes and cancel orders of locally made planes.

Chief Executive Officer Calin Rovinescu lambasted the government during the airline’s second-quarter earnings call Friday, saying that current restrictions — especially a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all travelers coming into Canada, regardless of origin — are preventing a recovery.

Luis Gabriel Cahuec Moran toiled on Ontario farms to support his wife and three children back home in Guatemala: Early Wednesday, the 35-year-old was murdered in Wilmot Township in the Kitchener area.

Cops say Alex Lopez Noriega, 33, from the same village in the Central American country, is now charged with first-degree murder.

“It is heartbreaking,” Moran’s friend Byron Cruz, who gave the bad news to his wife, told CTV News.

Shares of the so-called blank-check company merging with electric carmaker Fisker fell 20% on Friday after it disclosed it would not close a deal by the end of July to use Volkswagen AG’s electric-vehicle platform for its vehicles.

Spartan Energy Acquisition Corp, backed by alternative investment manager Apollo Global Management Inc , announced a deal this month to take Fisker public through a merger that valued the EV startup at $2.9 billion. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
