Such a great buzz being able to say that having won 3 Gold and 2 Silver medals by day 13 of 2016 Olympic Games Croatia is Number 18 out of 206 countries competing and yet population wise it would probably be on the tail end of this count. What a fantastic achievement. So proud!

Sandra Perkovic 2016 Olympic Gold

Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic flirted with disaster by fumbling the first two throws before snatching gold in the women’s discus on Tuesday 16 August, successfully defending her 2012 London Games title. Hence, becoming only the second woman to successfully defend her Olympic discus title. In Rio, Perkovic appeared on edge but dug deep to hurl her third effort 69.21 meters and retain her crown, winning by 2.48 meters ahead of rivals who never looked like matching her.

Martin and Valent Sinkovic 2016 Olympic Gold

Croatian brothers Martin and Valent Sinkovic secured a gold medal in the men’s double sculls final in the Olympic rowing regatta on Thursday 11 August 2016, in a tough duel that saw them battling Lithuania’s boat neck-and-neck for much of the race.

After taking an early lead and holding Lithuania’s Mindaugas Griskonis and Saulius Ritter to the second-place spot through the 1000-meter mark, Croatia slipped back into second place in the third-quarter. Lithuanian fans in the stands at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon cheered wildly as the two boats battled for gold through the final half of the race.

Ultimately, Croatia won in a time of 6:50.28, Lithuania claimed silver in 6:51.39 and Norway took bronze.

Josip Glasnovic 2016 Olympic Gold

It was Monday 8 August 2016 when Croatia’s Josip Glasnovic captured gold in men’s trap at the Rio Olympics after defeating Italy’s Giovanni Pellielo in a sudden death final match that went to a shoot-off. Glasnovic and Pellielo went back and forth throughout the gold medal match until they both finished with 13 out of 15. In the fourth round of the sudden death shootout, Pellielo missed and Glasnovic followed up with a hit to win his first Olympic medal. Shooting first, Pellielo actually missed on his fourth shot. Glasnovic calmly hit his fourth and triumphantly raised his gun in the air as pink dust from the target blew in the gusting wind.

Though Glasnovic had found modest success in World Shooting Championships and European Shotgun Championships, his best finish was fifth place in the event, and he didn’t compete in the 2012 London Games. He was confident all afternoon though, being the only competitor in the semi-final at Rio to shoot a perfect 15 for 15.

This is the second consecutive gold medal for Croatia in men’s trap, as Giovanni Cernogoraz won in 2012 London games.

Damir Martin 2016 Olympic Silver

Croatian rower Damir Martin won the silver medal after finishing second in the final of the Men’s single sculls at Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon on Saturday 13 August 2016.

Martin, who cruised into the final after winning a qualifier and coming second in the semi-final, was beaten in a photo-finish by defending Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale from New Zealand. Czech Republic’s Ondřej Synek finished in third place.

The medal is another for Martin’s impressive collection. He already has an Olympic silver medal, two World Championship gold medals and a European Championship gold.

Tonci Stipanovic 2016 Olympic Silver

Tonci Stipanovic
2016 Olympic Silver

Tonci Stipanovic clinched Croatia’s maiden sailing medal on Saturday 13 August 2016 as he stood first overall after the opening-round races in the men’s Laser class.

“It’s still sinking in, this first medal, this was the best day on all five days of racing,” Stipanovic, who finished fourth at the 2012 London Olympics, told reporters. “I managed to pass Tom (Australia’s Tom Burton) on the downwind, and now it’s between just him and me.”

Despite only one first in the opening round, Stipanovic earned his spot at the front of the 10 medal-round finalists out of a 46-boat fleet with eight top-10 finishes in the preliminary races. Race ended with Australia’s Tom Burton finished claiming gold, Stipanovic won silver, and New Zealand’s Sam Meech got bronze.

With a few days of Olympic competitions left Croatia may climb the ladder of glory a notch higher but even if its medal tally stays as is it’s such a joy and pride to pin this feather onto the Croatian success cap. Ina Vukic, Prof. (Zgb); B.A., M.A.Ps. (Syd)

Iraq And The World Of Tomorrow

In the fateful year of 2003 the US and its friends, especially the United kingdom, decided that they would bring democracy to a Middle East by force…..it was a year or choice….and we chose to go to war in the name of democracy…..

The invasion of Iraq was a war of choice, which as predicted in advance brought mayhem to Iraq and increased the threat to Britain and British interests from al-Qaeda. There was no compelling reason for Tony Blair to make that choice for Britain in March 2003.

As the report says, “there was no imminent threat from Saddam Hussein” in March 2003 and “the strategy of containment could have been adapted and continued for some time”. This is in complete contradiction to Tony Blair’s continual assertions at the time that Iraq, equipped with “weapons of mass destruction”, was a grave threat to its neighbours and even to Britain itself – and had to be dealt with imminently.

Source: ANALYSIS: Iraq was a war of choice | Middle East Eye

The UK has had an investigation into why this war was necessary…..the US should have done the same……

For 13 years the closest thing to democracy for Iraq was an election…in the mean time there is factionalism and discord among the three major players in Iraqi politics, Sunni, Shia and Kurd……all that the US and UK has accomplished is the fracturing of Iraq…..

In the glorious year of our Lord, 2003 we as a nation took it upon ourselves to invade then occupy a sovereign nation, Iraq………the invasion was based on a collection of circumstances, right or wrong, that made it imperative that the nation should be invaded and its leader, Saddam, killed. And so it began.

Source: Iraq: Fracturing a Nation | Ace News Room

Now the conversation has returned to the proposal for a 3 state solution within the borders of Iraq…..at best it is a pipe dream…..

Since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003 and breakdown of the Iraqi state, ethno-sectarian partition has become a popular political mantra. The assumption is that a federal state based on three autonomous regions — Sunni Arab, Shiite Arab and Kurd — is the most realistic way to stabilize Iraq and keep its borders intact. This claim has revived alongside the devastation and communal distrust created by the Islamic State (IS) and the territorial, demographic and political changes resulting from the campaign to counter IS.

The problem is that a tripartite Iraqhas little bearing to realities on the ground, particularly in a post-IS context. Sunni Arab, Shiite Arab and Kurdish communities may be religiously and ethnically distinct and concentrated in particular regions, but they have also been dispersed across territories since the IS onslaught and are deeply fragmented. Internal boundaries and the uneven distribution of resources remain disputed between and within groups, creating additional challenges to reordering borders along clear ethno-sectarian fault lines. Instead of three self-sustaining regions, Iraq has become an amalgam of hyper-localized entities seeking self-rule and self-protection, while remaining dependent on Baghdad and prone to proxy conflicts

Source: The myth of a tripartite Iraq

Let’s go back to the democracy thing for Iraq……a great dream but will never work……

Baghdad is on the verge of falling to Islamist rebels, and Americans are somehow surprised. As far as we knew, things were peachy in Iraq until sometime last week. More important than trying to figure out what is happening, however, we are trying to figure out who to blame.

Republicans, who have now completely abandoned the idea that America should present a united front to the world, immediately blamed Obama for pulling out of Iraq. Democrats, who seem perpetually incapable of taking responsibility for anything, rushed to blame Bush for starting the war in the first place. There is plenty of blame to go around, of course. But in this case, they are both wrong; we should blame the British.

Source: Why Democracy in Iraq Will Never Be a Thing – IVN.us

So far nothing is working in Iraq…..the US has tried many different approaches to the situation and none are taking hold……is there a reason?

You betcha!

In one form or another, the US has been at war with Iraq since 1990, including a sort-of invasion in 1991 and a full-scale one in 2003. During that quarter-century, Washington imposed several changes of government, spent trillions of dollars, and was involved in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. None of those efforts were a success by any conceivable definition of the term Washington has been capable of offering.

Nonetheless, it’s the American Way to believe with all our hearts that every problem is ours to solve and every problem must have a solution, which simply must be found. As a result, the indispensable nation faces a new round of calls for ideas on what “we” should do next in Iraq.

With that in mind, here are five possible “strategies” for that country on which only one thing is guaranteed: none of them will work.

Source: Five things that won’t work in Iraq | Middle East Eye

The US and its buddies broke the country of Iraq and now nothing they do will fix the problem they created….

Croatia – Dodgem Car Race Pile-up To Election

Ed-McLachlan-Cartoons-Punch-1980-03-19-477

Having disbanded its government in June amidst scandals founded and unfounded, justified and unjustified, Croatia is up for snap general elections on 11 September.
If politics was a dodgem car platform then this time around election time has shaped into one messy pile-up in the so-called people’s corner with parties frantically pumping their accelerators but power is stuck on revving “me, me, me” and not budging anywhere, making the people at large increasingly sick of it all. I have lost count of the number of political parties and coalitions of allsorts, in the country of barely 5.5 million voters – counting those living abroad in the diaspora (living in Croatia probably 3.4 million voters).

"People's" Coalition Zoran Milanotic to the right

“People’s” Coalition
Zoran Milanovic to the right

Social Democrats centre-left party, led by former hopeless PM Zoran Milanovic, frantically screams out about its new deals and unnatural coalitions, such as the one with the HSS/Croatian Peasant Party centre-right, as the people’s saviours; frantic cries for positions of advantage to be filled by dodgy politicians echo everywhere around them. Its leftist partner HNS/Croatian People’s Party screeches foul at anyone and everyone not in that coalition, in order to secure more votes. Calling their coalition “People’s Coalition” (Narodna koalicija) had added a new dimension to the threat of this revving dodgem cars pile-up; a possible onslaught of renewed communist attacks and destruction of what’s left of pride in Croatia and its hard-won independence. Hell, WWII Yugoslav communists fought under the so called “People’s Freedom Battle” banner where they said they fought for freedom of the people, yet all they fought for was for Croatia not to have its freedom/independence but to remain enslaved and oppressed within communist Yugoslavia. Many a person will indeed shudder with horror in Croatia at the name this new, leftist coalition led by SDP has given itself. The name “People’s” belonging to the former League of Communists in Croatia (today’s SDP) does not carry its normal benevolent connotation in this case but rather spells disaster for Croatian freedom.

Then Bozo Petrov, leader of the Bridge/Most coalition of a handful of independent parties, partially responsible for the June collapse of government, keeps crashing his dodgem car against the

Bozo Petrov Most/Bridge

crash barrier. He’s pressing the accelerator while in clutch mode, yelling foul against everyone and anyone except himself to finally get stuck in one spot from which he says he can reach the people at grassroots best – enthusiastically setting up a sort of electoral offices in a couple of spots as if he had just invented sliced bread.

Petrov’s electoral nests of weirdly meshed individuals into a coalition has egged on new dodgem cars piling up on this heap of political chaos. Yes – new dodgem cars of coalitions such as the centre-right one (with Croatian Party of Right) called “Shift” (Pomak). And wouldn’t you know it: not even a “Shift” will budge former President Ivo Josipovic’s red-shaded party “Forward Croatia” dodgem car engaged in phrenetic gasping for attention from the bottom of the pile-up.

From left: Goran Aleksic, Vilibor Sincic, Ivan Lovrinovic

From left: Goran Aleksic,
Vilibor Sincic, Ivan Lovrinovic

Squealing and revving deep inside this chaotic dodgem pile-up is a tragically and awkwardly cobbled together dodgem car that threatens to change everything in Croatia. Everything! This coalition does not have a name yet that I know of but it’s put together by Live Wall (read: people holding hands in attempt to stop evictions of people from repossessed houses) (Vilibor Sincic), Most/Bridge dissidents called “Let’s Change Croatia” led by Ivan Lovrinovic and Franak Association/Goran Aleksic (group of people fighting banks for unfair loans in Swiss Francs). This coalition vows to fight (bare-handed, clenched fist) against banks, bad laws, corruption, bad justice system; you name it – they will tackle it; all for a cushy job as a representative in the Parliament that, given the lingering strong influence of communist past, seems to be choking from fighting opposing ideology demons every time a new sitting is on.

Ah, look in there, look in the pile-up, there’s a thundering dodgem car madly spinning in hot air its glider tyre, accumulating frantic speed, vowing to fix Croatia within eight to ten years in all

Milan Bandic (right)

Milan Bandic (right)

aspects of life – Milan Bandic 365 party (long term Mayor of Zagreb) aims to do this in coalition with Radimir Cacic’s Reformists (a burned, down and out former SDP deputy Prime Minister) and a well known economist Ljubo Jurcic, who has contributed diddy squat to improving Croatia’s drowning economy in the past decades; just rattled on trying to dish out impractical textbook wisdom every so often in the media. Evidently – another dodgy dodgem car on the pile-up.

Boris Miletic, IDS

Boris Miletic, IDS

Boris Miletic, leader of the Istrian IDS party takes the cake of dodgy dodgem cars on the pile-up with his mock-up of an Istrian passport, suggesting Istria wants out of Croatia as protest against those in pursuit of justice for communist (antifascist) crimes. He revs about, in clutch mode, about being tolerant and of worldly and civilised standards yet threatens (he said it was a joke!) to take Istria region out of Croatia because people seek justice for innocent victims of communist crimes.

HDZ/Croatian Democratic Union appears the only one that has jumped the crash barrier and appears as the only dodgem car not revving about frantically trying to convince voters they are it –

Andrej P{lenkovic, HDZ

Andrej Plenkovic, HDZ

God’s given to the people to solve their unbearable life’s problems. HDZ seems to be soberly and calmly tightening its ranks, inviting former political dissidents to return to its fold under the banner of gathering, unity and togetherness and braving a whole new political ambience in Croatia where it wants to go it alone- no coalition with anyone – in any electorate if it can avoid it. Since its new leader Andrej Plenkovic has stepped up to the task HDZ’s agenda in this pre-election time seems to be one of determination to shine for the people once again, to win back the voters it lost throughout vicious campaigns against it from the left wing in particular. Milan Kujundzic and Drago Prgomet are two strong and widely respected former members of HDZ who went away, formed their own parties, but now are back under the HDZ’s banner of “Gathering”. Gathering together is the message here and this has no place in the dodgem car pileup and chaos. It is giving out a message of serenity, professional ambience, humility and determination to succeed and to prove themselves worthy of their voters as well as of those they would like to see return to the conservative, centre-right fold of HDZ. Having said this, I do think Plenkovic has yet to prove himself as a worthy and skilful leader who will realise HDZ’s founding agenda of strengthening the values of Croatian struggle for independence and democracy, severing completely all ties to former communist regime in daily lives and public administration – if he fails, his dodgem car will fall into the pile-up and votes will flicker anywhere and everywhere except to form an outright majority government.

Society changes according to politics. It’s because of politics that life in Croatia stagnates on many important levels especially economic/employment and in pride of achievements. The biggest achievement Croatia has made in a thousand years of its existence is to fight for and win its independence and yet that big achievement is constantly being undermined and cheapened and belittled by politics of the communist nostalgia embedded in left or centre-left political orientation. This must not be permitted; Croatia like all free countries must celebrate its victories for freedom. The left-leaning political wings label all heartfelt patriotism toward independent Croatia as fascism. It is imperative Croatia’s new government passes new laws that will ban and forbid public display or usage of any communist Yugoslavia symbols. That is the last battle to true freedom and democracy Croatia must win, otherwise it will be crushed under the heavy weight of these dodgem car frantic pile-ups.

It is not just the countless political parties and coalitions that contribute to this frantic dodgem pile-up that does nothing except make voters apathetic towards voting. In the past six months in Croatia there have been dozens of civil organisations, professional associations, individuals shooting from the hip, media outlets … almost as if working in a political concert that has the aim of blackening the name of Croatian independence, the Homeland War and what Croatia fought for in 1990’s/ to secede from communist Yugoslavia and develop a democracy. The conservative government, led by HDZ, had been and still is labeled revisionist, nationalist, fascist, xenophobic – any time attempts are made to right the wrongs perpetrated by the former communist Yugoslavia regime.

Distressingly, these vicious political activists serving a communist agenda under the guise of democracy do not seem easily stoppable. A new scandal or aggressive allegations of fascism erupts almost every day, with the only aim to cut down conservative politics and Croatian patriotism no matter what the human cost. While one may shrug at all this and not give it serious thought, the fact is that multitudes suffer and are tired of not having political representation strong enough to deter the aggressive vilification that’s being dished out viciously by vicious protectors of communist crimes and communist past. My name is Adam: A reflection with Elias Khoury

I still feel mesmerized by this meeting. This is the first thing that comes to my mind. How blessed I am.

It also feels kind of weird, the whole feeling of being blessed is a bit of not a familiar feeling. So many windows of blossoming blessing have been opening to me lately.

I have spent the last few weeks literally mesmerized by reading the renowned novelist new book “My name is Adam- sons of the Ghetto”. It is one of those books that I am reading with so much passion and eagerness from one side, and somehow I am afraid to finish. A real masterpiece by all definitions.

Sometimes it happens that you fall into such a masterpiece especially after some not very best choices of a sequence of reads, which makes it even more valuable, and you might think this is why it is capturing your attention.

This started as the case with this novel, I had some bad luck with recent reads, and in order to disconnect from the judgment as a result, I left the book for some time.

I usually of course start my journey of a good read becoming part of the novel, either along side the writer or within the character and become an integral part of the story.

Adam is one story that strikes you as a reader from the very first instant. You start with the writer’s introduction and stop. Eloquence is not the only case here. A writer in the size of Khoury has definitely reached that far. But still, yes, eloquence cannot be just passed by. But then there is this kind of internal dialogue that starts from word one. You feel you entered hand in hand in the book with Khoury accompanying you. Or Khoury the writer himself is part of the story.

The introduction makes you stop and reread. Thinking there is a great secret awaiting you to uncover the very next page? And so it is.

You cannot but ask and keep wondering, who is Adam? Is he real or is he Khoury’s invention. The way events connect from previous work of Khoury Gate of the Sun. It is striking how it puts the reader into those questions. “What the hell is going on” I kept humming to myself each time.

Before entering to the story of Adam himself, the main character. The book takes us to Adam’s fascination or dream of writing a book that was never written. An ancient Umayyad poet whose story was more important than his poems, as he faced a dark end inside a wooden box in the Caliph’s court captures him. The question of: Why didn’t he knock on the box?” takes us intelligently by the writer to Ghassan Kanafani, the Palestinian legendary novelist in his work “the sons of the sun” and the masterpiece of a closure “ why didn’t they knock on the tank”?

Khoury’s question throughout the novel is somehow else. He will strike us his readers constantly with the question: “ Why didn’t they leave?” relating to the Palestinians who stayed in the Lid Ghetto.

The word Ghetto was absolutely new to me in the terminology of the history of the Nakba. At the first instant I was thinking the writer was making a certain comparison or resemblance between the Nakba and the haulocost, which he assured me he did not. However, tragedies carry the same implications, he emphasized. It does not matter how big the size of the murders. It implies tragedies with pain that is hard or impossible to redeem.

Khoury believes that the haulocost is the worse tragedy that took place and wipes Jews in Europe. Israel as a result was the pay off from Europe to their crimes, whereas, we Palestinians paid the price.

Entering the memories of Adam is by itself an exceptional journey. As I am trying to put together, I feel again this mesmerized feeling of being part of it all…. Discussing this live with Khoury made it all feel so unreal. …And at the same time so uniquely special…. rich…

Adam is a man born to a dead woman under an olive tree on the outskirts of Lid, one of the Palestinian many or probably most cities that were transferred into Ghettos in 1948. The term Ghetto was the term the Israeli army called the seized locked areas upon the occupation of 1948. It is not a resemblance or even an attempt to make the reader see it from a different perspective. But for me as a reader, I could only see this. I could not but see the powerful resemblance. Flashes from the novel keep stopping me infront of moment of Adam who was raised by Manal thinking she was his mother to only know the truth many years later, that she found him under the tree and named him Adam, the first Ghetto child, the son of her martyr husband, Hasan.

Manal… some icon of a woman…slipping throughout this novel. “ I am in love with this woman” Khoury laughs and tell me. She is gorgeous, he insists. “ Her stupid husband leaves her as a sixteen year old and go to fight. And later she marries that bastard of a man. This woman deserved a great life. I wish I have known her.”

We entered together inside the world of the characters. Discussing events and details. Our feelings towards them. At some point things became so mixed up, we both were relating to things as real. They are real… I thought.

Adam…. Who grew up later to decide to integrate in the Israeli society and became Adam the son of the Ghetto. This time the ghetto meant was the Auschwitz ghetto in Poland. When asked where he was from by Israeli colleagues at the college he would say: from the ghetto. He grew up in Lid. Knowing no name for his town but the ghetto. The Israeli on the other end would quickly sympathize with him believing that he meant that e is a son of a ghetto survivor. The fact that Adam carried his name, and blond fair looks made him easily fit in the other ghetto perspective.

There is the journey of Adam and his lover Dalia… who was Israeli. The confrontations there are so humanistic and powerful. Like many stories that go untold. Somehow, Adam’s story with Dalia awakens at some point his own identity of being a Palestinian. She is the woman who holds him out to his inner path of liberation… perhaps.

As the memory of Adam takes us into specific details of those months and years. An extremely powerful scene after a scene is described in such a sense, you would only see yourself in the middle of the setup of all. You will smell the blood of the dead corpses. You will see the rotten bodies lying on the sides of the street. You will be taking the journey of the group of men to the gardens to find water in an attempt to provide the thirsty population with water. The humiliation. The killing. The hunger. The devastation. The persistence to live despite the roaming strikes of death everywhere. And they did not leave….

Images of stolen land. Flashes of a homeland that in an instant becomes to others. Military rule. Coercion… separation … degradation.

And amid all flashes of happiness or lets say life passes by. Elia and his bride. That scene of the young woman dancing crazy with her starving infant in the yard, and later the dance of this woman as a bride, brings in an amazing reflection of how pain can be redeemed sometimes with instances of happiness…. Persistence to life.

“The Nakba is an ongoing tragedy.” Khoury emphasizes. “The Palestinians have made a crucial mistake in identifying the Nakba. The Palestinian Nakba didn’t take place in 1948. It started in 1948 and is still on going.”

As we occasionally stepped out of the pages of Adam, with me resorting to the fact that it is no longer important if Adam was his creation or he was real… Adam became Elia Khoury’s companion, and will remain for some time in his next book as well. “I think I will die before him.” He says with a sweet laughter. “ This Adam is exceptional.”

As I am putting this down in words, I cannot but be thankful for this great opportunity to have this chance of a discussion with Elias Khoury.

We spent around three hours with a discussion that was mixed with very strong emotions on the Arab reality. The pain. The very deep pain of Syria. His anger from dictatorships that define our lives as populations. Whether Ba’th or Da’esh he does not find any difference. Systems that are no based on democracy cannot be the solution. The only advice he has is that of “Younis” from the “Gate of the Sun”: “ We need to start over from the very beginning to proceed”. We need to be a nation who believes in the future not in the past. All the Arab systems are based on the past. The “Ba’th” means resurrection. There is no difference in the message. It is no wonder that the militants in Saddam Hussein’s army lead efficiently daesh and others. Because the mentality is the same. It is based on dictatorship and non-existence of people. It is about obedience and fellowship to the leader. The one and only.

Adam remains the hope that somehow, Elias Khoury holds… or so I analyze… or allow myself to analyze after this journey.

Adam is a journey inside each of us, his fears. His confusion. His redemption and his very deep pain …

Adam. Is a novel that will definitely be legendary … a novel that is stronger than any history book? Any narrative… a story of human race….

Adam….A real Masterpiece

Photos of American military equipment, identification cards and weapons appear to have been seized by ISIS militants in Afghanistan, though how they attained these items remains unclear.

Saturday, photos were released on social media after recent combat engagements which depict not only images of ammunition, a rocket launcher and communication equipment but a close up shot of U.S. Army Specialist Ryan Jay Larson’s ID as well.

Larson was not captured by ISIS.

“Obviously, SPC Larson is not captured – he is accounted for and with his unit despite having lost his ID card and possibly some of his equipment during recent operations,” Brigadier General Charlie Cleveland told Fox News. “Beyond that, there is a lot of equipment in those pictures.

“At this point, we don’t know if all of the equipment in the pictures was lost during recent operations or at some other time in the past.”

Defense Department spokesperson, Henrietta Levin, stated that they have no idea when the photos were taken or how they came into the equipment but assured Americans that no military personnel have been captured, according to Military Times.

“We are aware of erroneous reports that U.S. Army Specialist Ryan Jay Larson was captured by ISIL in Afghanistan,” Levin said, referring to one the Islamic State group’s other monikers. “These reports are false. He has been accounted for and remains in a duty status within his unit. We are looking into how he lost possession of his ID but can confirm he has been accounted for with his unit. ‎”

Defense Secretary Ash Carter confirmed that was the same location were almost 150 “heroic” Army Rangers were in heavy combat and took out “hundreds” of ISIS fighters.

Some of the equipment may have been left behind during this operation. Cleveland stated, however, that the lost equipment was not due to a “hasty” extraction.

How the items were left behind or lost is still being worked out by officials.

A Terrorist Diaspora

Diaspora? There is a fancy smancy word for you and a word that will mean absolutely nothing to people that think with their asses…..there have been many such movements in history….especially recent history.

Of course the one that probably gets the most press is the Jewish diaspora…..their reported time in Egypt and then the time after World War Two…….then the Palestinians in the 1940-1970, Cubans of the 1950-60, Vietnamese in the 1970’s and the people of Syria and Iraq in the 2010’s…..there have been many others but these are the first that jump to mind.

But what is Diaspora? The official definition…..

Diaspora means “to scatter” in Greek, but today we use the term to describe a community of people who live outside their shared country of origin or ancestry but maintain active connections with it.

A diaspora includes both emigrants and their descendants. While some people lose their attachment to their ancestral homeland, others maintain a strong connection to a place which their ancestors may have left generations ago. Many Americans come from mixed heritage and therefore can claim membership in multiple diaspora communities.

a group of people who live outside the area in which they had lived for a long time or in which their ancestors lived…

the movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland b: people settled far from their ancestral homelands

I bring up this subject because all the world’s hawks are telling the population that it is only a matter of time before the barbarous group known as ISIS will be defeated….but the truth is that ISIS can be defeated but the terror will continue….why?

Don’t expect terror attacks to end with the Islamic State’s defeat in Iraq and Syria. Though that defeat is on the horizon, “through the fingers of that crush are going to come hundreds of really dangerous people and they are going to flow primarily to Western Europe” and possibly into the US, FBI chief James Comey says, per the New York Times. It will be “a terrorist diaspora out of Syria like we’ve never seen before,” he adds, per Bloomberg. “A lot of terrorists fled out of Afghanistan in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This is 10 times that or more.

John Kerry announced last week that ISIS has been driven from almost 50% of its territory in Iraq and 20% of its territory in Syria. But “not all of the Islamic State killers are going to die on the battlefield,” says Comey, speaking from the International Conference on Cyber Security in New York. Future attacks inspired or carried out by ISIS—especially lone-wolf attacks that are “increasingly hard” to stop—are “the greatest threat to the physical safety of Americans today” and will be “an order of magnitude greater than anything we’ve seen before.” Europe has gotten a look at that reality with the attacks in Brussels and Paris, he adds. But as for the US, “that challenge is going to come.”

All the remaining fighters will disperse and most likely continue the terror from wherever they land.

Comey likened it to the post-Mujaheddin situation in Afghanistan around 1989-1990, which led to the formation of al-Qaeda and a huge influx of seasoned Islamist fighters into conflicts the world over. Comey warned this situation would be “10 times that or more.”

Then what ?

The spin by Washington is that ISIS has lost about 50% of its territory and is on the road to a defeat….if this is accurate then maybe a plan should be formulated that would take into consideration the influx of fighters after the fall.

A recent paper by a friend at Bar-Ilan University also covers this topic…..

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The West should seek the further weakening of Islamic State, but not its destruction. A weak but functioning IS can undermine the appeal of the caliphate among radical Muslims; keep bad actors focused on one another rather than on Western targets; and hamper Iran’s quest for regional hegemony.

I know that most Americans like a win-win scenario….but when it comes to terrorism there is no such thing.

incoherent reflection

I have been away from hearing news for the last two weeks, as I was busy with personal issues that required travelling. I was desperately grasping into news outlets to check out what was going on in my absence, to realize that nothing actually changes but to the worse.

After two weeks of absence, news on killing from all direction is just what is ongoing. In Syria, Iraq, Palestine, elsewhere. People are killing each other. It is no longer an issue of occupation for Palestine.

Alternatively, the issue of the infidels to Daesh and its allies, or the Ikhwan and the Sissi followers. It is about anyone who is different from you. The killing of a Palestinian boy by Nusra or Daesh in Syria is not different from the killing of the Copt in Egyptian suburbs, and it is not of any difference from the killings among Palestinians in a street fight over a photo on Facebook or a quarrel in a wedding.

There is this mutual sense of tribal and expulsion mentality that is forming what we witness today. It is not about a religion or an ethnicity; it is just about ones tribe and ownership to a certain status or power.

The amount of hatred that is existing among people is a natural outcome of tribal thinking that is engraved in our education and culture. The rise of Daesh is not a work of a genius; it is a natural consequence of our upbringing as Arab Muslim nations. The abuse we are seeing in using historical names and incidents to justify the terror they are enforcing, is also a result of our ignorance as people in our history and figures. No wonder why as well… our education is based on memorizing and our upbringing is based on obedience to the “father power”, the teacher, the mufti, the imam … we never use our education for knowledge, but for blind following to what they dictated us on. This is why daesh has managed to expand. That is why there are so many as such as daesh that are spreading. It is easy to mobilize, because we are a nation of ignorant people who gained the most in repletion and memorizing. Thinking, analyzing and critical observation is still resisted.

What stopped me in today’s articles, and seemed like a good change, but surrounded with cloudy questions was an article translated from Hebrew about Khaled Mishaal ( Hamas top leader) declaring some time ago that Hamas is ready to recognize Israel and make peace.

The Israeli writer was critical and somewhere maybe was weary, not in the analysis but in the idea that this could be possible.

As I was thinking if Mishaal’s announcement has to do with the current situation of the upcoming municipality elections, which is very possible. Such elections is the last resort for the thirst of power these people want to have (both Fateh and Hamas). As Erekat was also announcing some “talks” possibilities, Mishaal daring declaration might be timely in this sense.

Somehow, the article made me think how right this could be. How smart as well it could be from Hamas side.

At the end fateh has nothing to offer except a promise of a talk in the never going to go further negotiations. However, at the same time, I cannot but stop at this abusive state of nation. How these people are ready to do all to win a seat of power that has nothing but their control over some money resources from donor countries. The whole issue of Israel is only revealing that Arab states and Palestinian leadership behind closed doors have always recognized Israel and nations have been mobilized against it in public. Now, the contradiction are too striking with the normalization of the different Arab states with Israel. I strongly believe, but overwhelmed with fear I can say, that the only way out towards a better living is the reconstruction of the Israel issue by us Palestinians. Recognition does not mean acceptance necessarily, there are so many miseries in this case that are hard to reconcile.

However, at the same time the recognition that Israel is an entity that is there not just as an occupier but also because of the announcement of the League of Nations and a compensation with what became the Arab states in the first quarter of the last century.

The only way out for us, is to start reading the reality with a critical and observing eye that can bring us a step forward to peace. Not the political peace that is consumed as a notion, but peace for us people. Palestinians, who are so distracted, shattered, bleeding in so many obstructions and frustrations, we no longer realize what we are.

Hundreds in Canada protest death of black man, dem

More than 500 people rallied in Canada’s capital on Saturday to protest the death of a mentally ill black man following an arrest, marching against what they see as race-based police brutality in a country that prides itself for being tolerant.

Abdirahman Abdi, 37, died on Monday. Witnesses told local media he was beaten by Ottawa police officers who responded to calls of a disturbance.

His death echoed events in the United States, where a string of killings of black men by police and allegations of brutality and racial bias have sparked protests.

Protesters chanted “Black lives matter!” as they started marching, a reference to the U.S.-founded anti-police brutality movement, which has an official chapter in Canada.

“They murdered him! Enough is enough!” the protesters chanted as they approached the Ottawa police headquarters, where the march ended in the late afternoon.

Organizers had said they would respect the wishes of Abdi’s family for the event to be peaceful, and while some protesters were so angry that others had to calm them down, none crossed the police barricade.

Police said there had been no arrests.

Abdi’s family spoke briefly before the march, thanking supporters, although organizers have said they do not want to be interviewed.

The family held Abdi’s funeral on Friday, which was attended by at least 600 people, including Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and other local politicians.

The province of Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, is looking into the circumstances surrounding Abdi’s arrest. Some advocates have called for criminal charges to be filed.

There have also been calls for a probe into whether race was a factor as advocacy groups voiced concerns over police violence against minorities.

In a statement, organizers of Saturday’s rally called for the officers involved in Abdi’s arrest to be put on unpaid leave, for all officers to wear body cameras, and for a review into how they deal with minorities and people in distress.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp reported one of the officers had been taken off patrol and that the other has been on leave. It was unclear whether that leave was paid or unpaid.

Ottawa police referred questions on the officers’ status to the Special Investigations Unit and questions on the organizers’ demands to the media relations team. Neither was immediately available.

Three jailed for India mother and daughter gang rape

Three jailed for India mother and daughter gang rape

Three men suspected of participating in the gang rape of a woman and her teenage daughter have been sent to jail for 14 days as investigations continue.

The two were dragged out of a car by a group of men along a highway between Noida, a Delhi suburb, and Kanpur city on Friday, reports said.

Three male relatives travelling with them were assaulted and tied up.

The incident has caused outrage across the country and raised questions about police efficiency.

Some of the victims alleged that they got no response from the official helpline number.

One of the men who was attacked told the Hindustan Times newspaper that the line had been continually busy and that when they finally got through, the officer at the other end of the line had “repeatedly asked questions instead of rescuing the family”.

Family members also alleged that a police van had driven past the field in Bulandshahr area where the incident took place, but had not stopped.

Senior police officer Sujeet Pandey told BBC Hindi on Monday that the three men, who were arrested on Sunday, were remanded in prison after they were identified by their victims.

Three more men were detained today, he added.

The Uttar Pradesh state government has suspended seven policemen in connection with the incident and set up a 300-member taskforce to investigate the incident.

The family was also robbed of money, jewelry and their mobile phones.

Scrutiny of sexual violence in India has grown since the 2012 gang rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus.

However, brutal sexual attacks against women and children continue to be reported across the country.

My heart aches for the fact that there has been another rape. Actually, there have been thousands world wide today, but this one was a mother and daughter. This just seems heinous to me. World leaders need to recognize that crimes against women are serious. Rape is a crime where a woman body in invaded, ravaged and desecrated. Rape should be almost as serious as murder. Rape kills a part of a woman and it can never be replaced.

The Pope says that the world is at war, not a religious war, but war. I say there is a war against women and minorities going on.I am anti war, but we have to punish people who attack events and groups of people severely. We need to punish rapists very severely because they can not stop their behavior. They feel no remorse and should be shut away for the rest of their lives.

There are too many people in prison for minor charges serving long sentences and rapists getting out in a couple of weeks. The is backwards. This needs to be straightened out. We need to protect citizens, especially women and children. We need to prevent an all out war.

“We regard our living together not as an unfortunate mishap

warranting endless competition among us

but as a deliberate act of God

to make us a community of brothers and sisters

jointly involved in the quest for a composite answer

to the varied problems of life.”
