“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.” Plato
“Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold.” Helen Keller
“Nothing gives a fearful man more courage than another’s fear.” (not sure)
I have been helping a professor friend with a class on terrorism and I have been watching the news and reading the reports….we should all be afraid be very afraid……
Fear is a weapon and a political tool…..it has been called the “propaganda of deed.”
All politicians and leaders should take fear seriously and not leave it to the nationalist right……while researching I found a good piece…..
The subject of fear has been debated in several fields for decades…..like sociology, psychology, security fields and even philosophy…..I read an article about a polish philosopher that covers this discussion….
Polish philosopher Zygmunt Bauman frames the upheaval across the globe as symptomatic of the diffusion of fear.
“Liquid fear,” Bauman explains, means fear flowing on our own court, not staying in one place but diffuse. And the trouble with liquid fear, unlike the concrete specific danger which you know and are familiar with, is that you don’t know where from it will strike.
“We are walking, that’s my favourite metaphor, as if on a minefield. We are aware that the field is full of explosives, but we can’t tell where there will be an explosion and when. There are no solid structures around us all on which we can rely, in which we can invest our hopes and expectations. Even the most powerful governments, very often, cannot deliver on their promise. They don’t have enough power to do so.”
Remember that old saying “we have nothing to fear but fear itself”?
I have along with a wealth of others has been trying to help readers and people to understand that “FEAR” is what the terrorists live for…it is their life’s blood…..the more they can spread fear the more there is an overreaction and that breeds more acts of terror that breeds more fear…..and the cycle goes on and one….
Terrorism is all too real a threat, and mass attacks cause a special kind of fear. Terrorist movements like ISIS kill innocents for the worst of causes and the worst of reasons. They seek to use fear to separate the West from the Muslim world, and to divide the Muslim world and dominate it. They try to use alienated Muslims in the West to create a growing climate of anger and distrust with Europe and the United States. They deliberately seek to get the West to overreact and lash out against all Muslims and Islam, just as they try to use extremism and violence to try to get the populations of Muslim countries to attack their own governments.
They also feed on Western ignorance of Islam, and the fear of new and unfamiliar risks. We in the West have learned to live with most forms of our mortality. We accept the fact that life has a wide range of risks, almost all of which are far more serious than terrorism: Lightning, suicide, traffic, disease, home accidents produce far more deaths than terrorism.
The way to avoid undue fear is by education.….education of the person and the nation….but that is not happening…instead the election of 2016 is fueled by fear….at least by one of the major parties…..
Like I stated in the title…Fear, The Mind Killer!
