The US seems to be Hell bent on continuing war upon war……and if so then it will need to drastically change its way of think about the military….that is if they want a primo military to carry out the wishes of the government.
Back in 2003 Rep. Rangel introduced a bill that would re-instate the draft………
The New York Democrat told reporters his goal is two-fold: to jolt Americans into realizing the import of a possible unilateral strike against Iraq, which he opposes, and "to make it clear that if there were a war, there would be more equitable representation of people making sacrifices."
Under his bill, the draft would apply to men and women ages 18 to 26; exemptions would be granted to allow people to graduate from high school, but college students would have to serve.
Back then because of the make up of the military I thought it was a good idea but I did not support it simply because of my experiences in the 1960’s……..but that was then and this is now.
We are waiting for the Congress to okay the authorization to use military force (AUMF)……and that piece of work got me to thinking…….
I cannot believe that I am writing this post……in my day the draft was an ever present black cloud hanging over your head and after Vietnam I was a an anti-war protester and opponent of the draft…I did not get drafted I enlisted in the US Army…..so the draft thing did not effect me….but I thought it was time to end this craziness…….and I have had an epiphany……I may have been mistaken.
Yep, you heard it right….MISTAKEN!
The last 4 admins have made sure that we will be in a continuous state of war for many, many years to come……..sad part is that the same troops are having to deploy multiple times….since only about 5%, if that mush, are the only ones protecting a this country while the others get to stay home play will Betty Lou, make money and spend all their time worrying about what some twit celeb is doing……and then the general of of the Joint chiefs has given the sad news…..
As reported in the WSJ………..
The Army’s top general said Monday that an increase in threats around the world requires that the U.S. rethink plans to cut the size of the American military’s ground force.
The Army agreed – reluctantly — to cut the size of its force to 490,000 under the budget reductions originally approved in 2011. But as a result of subsequent White House-Congress spending battles and military budget reviews, Pentagon leaders said the Army has had to make plans to shrink even further, to 450,000 or even 420,000.
But Gen. Ray Odierno, the chief of staff of the Army, said Monday that even 490,000 may be too small, given recent events such as the rise of militants fighting for Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, and Moscow’s moves in Eastern Europe.
“The world is changing in front of us. We have seen Russian aggression in Europe, we have seen ISIS, we have seen increased stability in other places,” Gen. Odierno said. “So I now have concern whether even going below 490,000 is the right thing to do or not, because of what I see potentially on the horizon.”
A bleak pronouncement….we will NOT be capable of dealing with a more dangerous world. (Pause here for the more slow to grasp the situation)……..
I could say that I regret that I have changed my feeling on this situation….but that would be disingenuous……..the truth is that I am sick of all these twats that talk about patriotism and duck from having to do anything themselves…the draft will not be perfect, as it wasn’t in my day, but Americans need to put my skin if the game of military service. And if all the prediction are correct then our military will be stretch to its limits……sorry to say the only solution to this approaching problem is conscription.
Like it our not if war is the future we will need a waiting supply of candidates for military service….sad that it has come to this……
Maybe then more citizens will wake up to what it means to be a veteran. As it is now……….they have NO F*CKING idea!
